Transcription: Local chieftain Lapu-Lapu had defied Magellan's authority and refused to recognize the rule of the Spaniard's native ally King Umabon. Magellan led an expedition of 60 of his men to teach Lapu-Lapu a lesson. Magellan expected an easy victory over the naked natives, but the battle was a disaster. 1,500 natives bombarded the Spaniards with arrows and rocks as they waded ashore, and the Spaniards could not use their guns or crossbows because of the terrain. Most of the men ran back to the boats, with Jelen and eight others exposed on the beach.
